Wrong shipping method name on subscription orders
Find out why renewal orders show "Subscription Shipping", an old carrier, or the wrong rate name, and how to fix it
Your renewal orders show "Subscription Shipping", a carrier you stopped offering months ago, or a rate name your warehouse doesn't recognize. This matters most when your fulfillment partner, 3PL (third-party logistics warehouse), or ERP (order management system) chooses a carrier based on the shipping method name.
The reason: each subscription stores its own shipping method, which is a name, a code, and a price. Renewal orders copy that stored method. If the name is wrong or out of date, every renewal order carries the wrong name. This article explains where the name comes from and how to correct it on one subscription or many.
Symptoms
- Renewal orders show "Subscription Shipping" as the shipping method.
- Subscriptions or orders show "Custom Rate".
- "We removed FedEx Ground Economy, but subscriptions still use it."
- "Orders still go out by an expensive carrier we no longer offer."
- "The order says Next Day Air, but the subscription says Ground."
- "Our 3PL can't route renewal orders because the shipping method is wrong."
- "How do I change one subscriber from USPS to FedEx?"
Quick checks
- What name does the subscription store? In Awtomic, open the subscription and look at the shipping row. Is it the name you expect?
- Does that rate still exist in Shopify? In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery, open the shipping profile that holds the subscription's plan (usually Awtomic Subscription Shipping), and look for a rate with that name in the customer's zone.
- Was the rate set by hand? Does the shipping row show "Custom Rate" or "Subscription Shipping"? If yes, someone set a custom rate on this subscription. See The order shows "Subscription Shipping" below.
- Do your 3PL or ERP rules match on the shipping method name? If yes, list the names they expect, so you can check them against your subscriptions.
Where the name comes from
When a customer subscribes, Shopify saves a shipping method on the subscription: its name, its code, and its price. This is usually the cheapest rate for the address, which can differ from the rate the customer picked at checkout. Renewal orders use the stored method.
Changing or removing a rate in Shopify doesn't rewrite subscriptions that already exist. A subscription can keep a name you deleted months ago.
The name can change later when Awtomic asks Shopify for the subscription's rate again, for example after a product change. Shopify then returns only its cheapest rate for the address. If the subscription is already on that rate, it keeps it. If not, it gets the cheapest rate, and the name changes to that rate's name. See How a subscription's shipping rate is set and when it changes.
Causes and fixes
A removed carrier or rate is still on subscriptions
Why it happens. You removed or renamed a rate in Shopify. Existing subscriptions still hold the old name, code, and price.
How to confirm. Open a few affected subscriptions in Awtomic and compare the shipping row with the rates in your profile.
How to fix many subscriptions.
- In your Awtomic subscription list, filter to the affected group, for example by product and country.
- Run a bulk update with Update shipping rate and Refresh latest rate from Shopify delivery profiles. Each subscription that isn't already on Shopify's cheapest rate for its address gets that rate, with its name and price.
- Test on 3 to 5 subscriptions first, then run the rest.
See Bulk update shipping rates.
ImportantRefresh can't move subscriptions to a rate you choose.
Shopify returns only its cheapest rate for each address, so refresh always uses that rate.
If you need a specific paid rate, set a custom rate on each subscription, or use the Shopify Flow action below to set the price and the method name.
This follows Shopify's rule that "After the initial delivery, recurring shipments default to the least expensive available shipping method" (Shopify's shipping rules for recurring subscription shipments).
Large clean-ups. If thousands of subscriptions reference removed rates, contact support before you start.
What to expect. The next renewal order uses the new name and price. Orders that already exist don't change.
The order shows "Subscription Shipping"
Why it happens. Someone set a custom rate on the subscription with Edit shipping rate in Awtomic. Until 21 October 2026, Awtomic saved custom rates without a name, and Shopify still shows them on renewal orders as "Subscription shipping" (or "Subscription pickup" for pickup). Custom rates set since then are named "Custom Rate".
How to confirm. Open the subscription. The shipping row shows "Subscription Shipping" or "Custom Rate".
How to fix.
- In Awtomic, open the subscription.
- On the shipping row, select Edit shipping rate.
- Choose a named rate from the list. Shopify lists only its cheapest rate for this address and these products, plus local delivery if you offer it.
- Select Save.
The subscription now has that rate's name, code, and current price. To fix many subscriptions at once, use the bulk refresh in the cause above. It replaces custom rates with Shopify's cheapest rate.
If the list shows only Custom shipping rate, Shopify has no rate for this subscription. See No shipping rates for subscription products.
NoteIf you choose Custom shipping rate again, the subscription is named "Custom Rate".
Use a named rate if your fulfillment partner routes by name.
A bulk update with a fixed amount kept the old name
Why it happens. A bulk update with Define a custom rate changes only the price. The stored name stays the same.
How to fix. Run a refresh instead, or edit the affected subscriptions one at a time. See Bulk update shipping rates.
You want one subscriber on a different carrier
Why it happens. A subscription stores a shipping method name, code, and price. It doesn't store a carrier service that forces how the order ships. Awtomic can't make one subscription's renewals ship by a specific carrier.
How to fix.
- If the carrier's rate is your cheapest rate for this address, use Edit shipping rate on the subscription and choose it. The renewal orders then carry that rate's name. A more expensive rate won't be in the list.
- If your fulfillment partner picks the carrier, ask them to route this customer or this order by another field.
- If you use Shopify Flow, the Awtomic Update shipping rate action can rename the shipping method on one subscription, with the fields Shipping Method Title, Shipping Method Customer-Facing Title, and Shipping Method Code. A code is required to rename a method. See Shopify Flow integration.
The order and the subscription show different methods
Why it happens. In rare cases, a renewal order shows a different method from the one stored on the subscription, for example "Next Day Air" on the order and Ground on the subscription. This is handled on Shopify's side.
How to fix. Contact support with the order ID and the subscription ID. Don't change the subscription until support has looked at it.
What Shopify controls
| Behavior | Owner | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| The method stored on a new subscription, usually the cheapest rate for the address | Shopify | Name your rates the way your 3PL expects |
| Removing a rate doesn't update existing subscriptions | Shopify (each subscription stores its own rate) | Bulk refresh |
| Renewal orders copy the stored method | Shopify | Fix the stored method |
| Which rates are offered for an address | Shopify (your profile) | Fix zones and rates |
| Old custom rates show "Subscription Shipping" | Awtomic (fixed for new edits) | Re-pick a named rate |
| No per-subscription carrier service | Awtomic and Shopify | Route in your 3PL, or pick a named rate |
| The standard subscription export doesn't include the rate name or code | Awtomic | Check subscriptions in Awtomic, or use the Awtomic API |
ImportantIf your 3PL or ERP maps orders to carriers, match on the shipping code or price instead of the name.
Renewal orders carry the rate code on their shipping line. Check that your 3PL reads it.
Names change when a rate is edited, or when Awtomic asks Shopify for the rate again.
If you use an AI agent
- Ask your agent to read each affected subscription's stored method with the Awtomic API:
GET /customers/{customerId}/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}. Look atDeliveryMethod.shippingOptions(codeandpresentmentTitle) andDeliveryPriceAmount. These fields aren't listed in the API reference yet. Shopify's own subscription contract queries only work for the app that owns the subscription. - Ask it to compare those names and codes with the rates in your Shopify shipping profile, and list the subscriptions that use a rate that no longer exists.
- Keep the agent to reading. Fix the affected subscriptions yourself with a bulk update or by editing each one in Awtomic, as described above.
- See Debug subscription shipping with your AI agent.
