Add the subscription widget to your theme
The Subscription Widget app block adds purchase options to your product pages. Add it to each product template on your live theme from the Launch page in Awtomic, then control how it looks under Tools → Widget Configurations.
Before you begin
- Assign at least one Awtomic subscription plan to your products. See Assigning subscription plans to products.
- Use a theme that supports app blocks (an Online Store 2.0 theme). If your theme doesn't, the Launch page shows a warning. Contact [email protected] and we'll help you add the widget.
- If your store still uses the old subscription widget, follow Switch from the old subscription widget instead, so customers don't see two sets of purchase options.
1. Add the block to each product template
- In Awtomic, go to Launch and find Add the subscription widget to your theme. The step lists every product template on your live theme, with templates that are missing the widget at the top.
- Click Add next to a template. The Shopify theme editor opens on that template with the Subscription Widget block already added to the product information section.
- Drag the block above the quantity selector and Add to cart button.
- Click Save.
- In Awtomic, click Check again. The template now shows Added.
- Repeat for each product template that sells subscription products.
The step shows Complete once your default product template has the widget.
Adding the block from the theme editorYou can also add the block yourself: in Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, click Customize, open the product template, click Add block in the product information section and select Subscription Widget from the Apps list. See Subscription Widget.
2. Add optional blocks
Under Optional blocks in the same step, click Add next to a block to open your default product template with the block added. Neither block is required to complete the step.
| Block | What it does | Before you add it |
|---|---|---|
| Gift form | Lets customers buy a prepaid subscription as a gift. | The product must be on a multi-order prepaid plan with Enable gifting on this prepaid plan turned on, or the form won't work. See Gift Form. |
| Product Price | Replaces your theme's product price with one that updates when customers choose a subscription. | Hide or remove your theme's own Price block so customers don't see two prices. See Product Price. |
3. Customize the widget
The widget works with its built-in look. To change its look or behavior:
- In Awtomic, go to Tools → Widget Configurations and click Create widget.
- Set it up on the General, Preferences, Texts, Styles and Custom CSS tabs. Each setting is described in Subscription Widget.
- Click Save in the save bar.
The first widget you create becomes your Default widget. To show a different widget on some product templates, click Widget Mappings on the Widget Configurations page, then Add mapping. Choose the widget and the templates, and click Save. A mapping with no templates selected applies to every template that isn't mapped elsewhere.
If you sell in more than one language, create a widget for each language and map it to that language's product templates.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The widget doesn't appear on a product | The product has an Awtomic subscription plan, its template shows Added in the Launch step, and Hide widget if only one purchase option is off in the widget's Preferences. |
| The widget disappeared after a theme change | App blocks belong to a theme. After you publish a different theme, add the block again from the Launch step, which always checks your live theme. |
| Customers see two subscription widgets | The old subscription widget is still on. See Switch from the old subscription widget. |
| The Launch step says your theme doesn't support app blocks | Your theme isn't an Online Store 2.0 theme. Contact [email protected]. |
| Product pages built with a page builder such as Shogun or GemPages | These pages don't use your theme's product template. Contact [email protected] before you set up the widget. |
