Migration process from a non-Shopify platform
If you're moving on to Shopify and need to move over your subscriptions as well here's a high-level look at the process
Moving from another e-commerce platform to Shopify and bringing over your current subscriptions presents unique challenges, but we have helped many merchants make the change with no disruption to their customers or service. This kind of migration does require a bit more upfront work but the Awtomic support team will help with each step in the process.
Pre-Migration Process
Before migration, Awtomic's support team will review your current subscription data to ensure a smooth transition and identify any potential issues. Here’s what you need to do:
- Contact us at [email protected] to express your interest in migrating to Awtomic Subscriptions.
- Our onboarding team will ensure your team and website are ready to go live with Awtomic
- We’ll request access to necessary data, apps, and payment gateways. You can expedite the process by granting admin access to our support team ([email protected])—access can be revoked post-migration.
- All existing subscribers will need to have a Shopify Customer created and all the products that are subscribed to will need to exist in Shopify. We recommend using Matrixify in order to make importing all of those items to your new Shopify shop easier.
- In order to create payment methods that we can use to renew subscriptions with we'll need to import your tokens into Shopify. Currently Shopify allows those to be imported from Stripe, Braintree, Paypal Express (just Express) and Authorize.net. If your tokens are outside of those four gateways then we'll need to work with you and your current gateway to move the tokens over to Stripe. If you are using one of those four then you just need to connect the legacy gateway to Shopify. This connection will need to remain for as long as these migrated subscriptions continue to need to be billed. You can connect with one of these links:
- Stripe: https://admin.shopify.com/store/{shop}/payments/legacy_subscription
- Braintree: https://admin.shopify.com/store/{shop}/payments/legacy_subscription_braintree
- Authorize.net: https://admin.shopify.com/store/{shop}/settings/payments/legacy_subscription_authorize_net
- If you're migrating from PayPal Express then you'll need to be sure that Paypal Express is enabled on your Shopify shop and that you are approved to use reference transactions from PayPal
- To import subscriptions into Awtomic we'll need the customer and subscription data from your current profile. We have data templates we can help you fill out to get that data prepared for the migration. That data template and instructions can be found here.
- We’ll reach out with any questions and schedule a migration date once everything is ready. This pre-migration process usually takes a few days, but we can expedite it if needed.
Migration Process
Once we have everything we need and a migration date is set, the process is straightforward:
- We’ll perform the migration during off-hours to minimize any impact on your customers.
- Migrations typically take a few hours, depending on the size and complexity of your data. Migrations for over 30,000 subscriptions should budget a few days for the full migration.
- After completion, we’ll notify you and provide any necessary follow-up instructions.
- If possible, we’ll cancel your previous subscription platform to prevent double billing.
Post-Migration Process
- To avoid charges from the legacy platform, we recommend cancelling the account on the platform and/or cancelling all subscriptions on that platform. We will have discussed the plan to do this ahead of time.
- Customers will receive notifications from Awtomic going forward, but not at the time of migration. The migration will upgrade their subscription management experience but not otherwise disrupt their experience.
