No shipping rates for subscription products
Fix "Shipping not available" at checkout, "already sold out" errors, card-on-file orders stuck on shipping, and an admin picker that only offers "Custom shipping rate"
Customers can't check out a subscription product because no shipping method is offered, or your team can only pick Custom shipping rate when editing a subscription. One-time purchases of the same product often still work.
In almost every case, Shopify found no shipping option for that product and address. The cause is in your Shopify shipping profiles, locations or inventory, not in the subscription itself. A shipping profile is Shopify's set of shipping rules for a group of products. A location is a place you stock and ship from, such as a winery, warehouse or store.
NoteShopify calculates checkout shipping rates. Awtomic does not choose them.
When Shopify returns no options, Awtomic has nothing to offer except a custom rate.
Symptoms
At checkout or on the storefront:
- "Shipping not available. Your order cannot be shipped to the selected address." (Shopify). Shopify also shows "Your order cannot be shipped to the selected address. Enter a different address". Some stores see "Shipping is not available. The order cannot be shipped to the selected address."
- No delivery method at all for the subscription items, or only for some states or provinces.
- Adding a subscription product to the cart fails with "already sold out" (sometimes shown as a 422 error), even though the product is in stock (Shopify).
- Card-on-file orders stay stuck on the shipping step, for example orders placed with a saved card in your tasting room or storefront.
In the Awtomic admin:
- Edit shipping rate on a subscription offers only Custom shipping rate.
- "No delivery options available for this address" (Awtomic).
In the customer portal and Awtomic flows:
- "Unfortunately, we do not ship to this location. Please contact {your store email} for more information." (Awtomic)
- "There are no shipping options available for that address." (Awtomic)
- "No delivery options available for the selected address. Please update your address or reach out to merchant if problem persists." (Awtomic)
- "No delivery options available for this address." (Awtomic)
What merchants often say:
- "Subscriptions can't ship to Oregon, but one-time orders can."
- "Only one club product is affected."
- "Our promotion broke shipping."
- "Shopify support says our shipping profile looks fine."
Quick checks
- Does a one-time purchase of the same product to the same address get a rate? If no, the problem is your general Shopify shipping setup, not subscriptions. Fix it in Shopify admin under Settings → Shipping and delivery first, using Shopify's guide to troubleshoot missing shipping rates at checkout.
- Can you reproduce it as a subscription? Open the product page on your storefront, select the subscription option, add it to the cart and go to checkout with the failing address. Test from the product page, not from a cart link: Shopify's cart permalinks don't support subscription plans, so they add a one-time item. If checkout shows no rates, keep going.
- Is Enable subscription shipping turned on for the product's plan? In Awtomic, go to Subscription plans and open the plan. The checkbox is under Shipping, at the bottom of the Discount card in the Pricing section. On prepaid plans it is at the bottom of the Payment options card in the Prepaid terms section, or, on multi-order prepaid plans, in the Pricing section below Term and Specify price.
- If on, the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile sets the rate. Run checks 4 to 7 against it.
- If off, the product's own Shopify profile (usually General, Shopify's default profile) sets the rate. Run checks 4, 5 and 7 against that profile. See The product's own profile doesn't cover the address.
- Is the product stocked at a location that ships to the customer's state in that profile? In Shopify admin, compare Products → [product] → Inventory with the locations in the profile. If no, go to The product is stocked only at a location that doesn't ship to that state.
- Does the profile have at least one active location? In Shopify admin, check Settings → Locations. If no, go to The subscription profile has no active location.
- Does a zone in the profile include the customer's country and state, with at least one rate? A zone is a group of countries or states that share the same rates. If no, go to The state or country is missing from the zone.
- Is the same country and state also in a zone of your General profile? If no, go to The zone is missing from your General profile.
- Do you use delivery customizations or a shipping rate app? Turn them off and test again. If rates appear, go to A delivery customization or rate app hides the rates.
- Does every address fail at once, for every product? If yes, go to All zones fail at the same time.
The Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile is not listed on Shopify's Settings → Shipping and delivery page. Open it from Awtomic: go to Settings → Logistics and operations and click Manage rates.
ImportantShopify is moving stores from shipping profiles to shipping options by market.
If Settings → Shipping and delivery shows Shipping options grouped by market, your store has moved, and you manage rates from Markets instead.
On a moved store, rates from apps, such as Awtomic's subscription rates, appear in each market's shipping options. Shopify says you can turn them on or off there, but not edit them.
Shopify doesn't move a store that uses an app until it confirms the app is compatible.

Causes and fixes
The product is stocked only at a location that doesn't ship to that state
This is the most common cause.
Why it happens: Shopify only offers a rate if the product is stocked at a location that ships to the customer's address in the profile that applies. Many stores ship different states from different locations, for example a winery for nearby states and a fulfillment partner for the rest. If a product is stocked only at the winery, customers in states served by the fulfillment partner get no rate.
This often appears with a new product launched for a promotion or a special release. Because it starts at the same time as the promotion, it is easy to blame the promotion or a discount. Check inventory locations before you change your discounts.
Typical signs:
- Only one product, or one club, is affected.
- Only some states or provinces fail. Others in the same zone may work.
- Card-on-file orders for those customers get stuck on the shipping step.
- The same product works as a one-time purchase, or another product works to the same address.
How to confirm:
- In Shopify admin, open the product and look at its inventory. Note every location that stocks each variant.
- Open the profile that applies (see Quick checks 3). The General profile is under Settings → Shipping and delivery. Open the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile from Awtomic's Manage rates button.
- Find the location that ships to the failing state in that profile.
- If the product isn't stocked at that location, this is the cause.
How to fix: Do one of these:
- Stock the product at the location that ships to that state. Shopify explains how to assign inventory to locations.
- Or add the location that stocks the product to the profile, with zones and rates for that state. See manage fulfillment locations in shipping profiles.
If a variant is stocked at more than one location, include every one of those locations in the profile. In one case support saw, the subscription only got rates once both locations were in the profile.
What to expect afterwards: New checkouts and card-on-file orders get rates right away. Stuck card-on-file orders need to be placed again. Existing subscriptions keep their saved rate. If a renewal already failed, see Renewal failed: INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND.
NoteA card-on-file charge can also fail for a separate reason: a discount code that only applies to one-time purchases.
Card-on-file orders are subscription orders, so set the discount's purchase type to include subscriptions.
See Free shipping for subscriptions.
The subscription profile has no active location
Why it happens: The Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile has no locations, or its only location is inactive. Shopify then treats subscription items as unavailable. This is why adding a subscription product to the cart can return "already sold out" while the one-time version adds fine.
How to confirm:
- In Awtomic, go to Settings → Logistics and operations and click Manage rates. This opens the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile in Shopify.
- Check which locations it ships from.
- Go to Settings → Locations and check that those locations are active and fulfill online orders. Shopify's add a location page shows where the "Inventory at this location is available to fulfill online orders" setting is.
How to fix: Add an active location that stocks your subscription products to the profile, with rates for your zones. If you don't need different rates for subscriptions, you can instead turn off Enable subscription shipping on the plan. Shopify then uses the product's own profile.
What to expect afterwards: Subscription products add to the cart and get rates at checkout.
The state or country is missing from the zone
Why it happens: Your Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile starts empty. You add its zones and rates yourself in Shopify, and Awtomic never edits them. A state or country you ship to may never have been added, or a zone may have no rate.
How to confirm: Open the profile in Shopify. Check that a zone includes the customer's country and state, and that the zone has at least one rate. Alaska, Hawaii and military (APO/FPO) addresses are often missed.
How to fix: Add the country or state to a zone, or create a new zone with a rate. Shopify explains how to set up shipping zones and rates. For the Awtomic side, see Set up subscription-specific shipping rates.
What to expect afterwards: New checkouts get the rate. Existing subscriptions keep their saved rate until you update them. See Bulk update shipping rates.
The zone is missing from your General profile
Why it happens: Shopify returns a subscription profile rate only if the same country or state also exists in a zone of your General profile. Every zone in the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile needs a matching zone in General, or Shopify returns no rate for subscription items to that address. Shopify doesn't document this, but we tested it: a zone added only to the subscription profile returned no rate, and the subscription rate appeared as soon as the same country was added to General. This is Shopify behavior, not something Awtomic controls.
How to confirm: The zone exists in the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile, and your General profile leaves that state or country out.
How to fix: Add the same country or state to a zone in your General profile, with at least one rate. Your subscription rate can stay different.
What to expect afterwards: New checkouts get the subscription rate for that address.
The product's own profile doesn't cover the address
Why it happens: When Enable subscription shipping is off, the subscription uses the product's own Shopify profile. That profile may not ship to the state, or the product may not be stocked at a location that does.
How to confirm: Find the product's profile in Settings → Shipping and delivery. Run Quick checks 4 to 6 against that profile.
How to fix: Add the zone, rate or location to that profile. Or turn on subscription shipping and set up the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile. See Set up subscription-specific shipping rates.
A delivery customization or rate app hides the rates
Why it happens: Delivery customizations (apps that hide, rename or reorder shipping options at checkout), pickup point apps and live-rate apps can hide or replace rates. Some carrier-calculated rate apps don't return rates for subscription items.
How to confirm: In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery → Delivery customizations, turn yours off, and test the same checkout again. Shopify explains these under add a delivery customization.
How to fix: See Shipping apps and delivery customizations.
All zones fail at the same time
Why it happens: If every address fails for every product at once, the cause is usually outside your recent changes. A Shopify incident has deselected every zone and state in shops' profiles before.
How to confirm: Check shopifystatus.com. Open your profiles and check that your zones still list their countries and states.
How to fix: Re-select the countries and states in each zone. If Shopify reports an incident, wait for it to be resolved and test again. Renewals that failed in the meantime need to be billed again. See Renewal failed: INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND.
Why the admin only shows "Custom shipping rate"
When you click Edit shipping rate on a subscription, Awtomic asks Shopify for the rates for that subscription's address and products. Shopify returns only the cheapest shipping rate for the address, plus local delivery and pickup options where they apply. Awtomic adds a Custom shipping rate option.
If Custom shipping rate is the only option, Shopify returned no rates. Awtomic's setup is not the cause. Run the Quick checks for that subscription's address and products.
When you change the address instead (Edit on the Shipping address card), the Confirm shipping rate step may not offer Custom shipping rate. It is hidden when Do not recalculate shipping rate when the administrator updates subscription from the Shopify app is ticked. When Shopify returns no rates there, you see "No delivery options available for this address".
Edit shipping rate is greyed out on pickup and local delivery subscriptions, so this section applies to shipping subscriptions only.
You can save a custom rate to keep the subscription billing. Edits on the subscription keep a custom rate. A bulk Refresh latest rate from Shopify delivery profiles replaces it with the rate Shopify returns for the address. See Edit the shipping rate in a subscription.
Awtomic sign-up forms and card-on-file orders
Awtomic's own sign-up forms and card-on-file orders also get their rates from Shopify. When Shopify returns no rates, these flows can't complete the shipping step.
In Awtomic sign-up forms you may see these codes in error messages or logs:
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
DELIVERY_OPTION_REQUIRED | The order was sent without a shipping option. Usually Shopify offered none for the address. |
DELIVERY_OPTION_NOT_AVAILABLE | The shipping option the customer chose is no longer offered for that address. |
PICKUP_LOCATION_NOT_AVAILABLE | "This pickup location is no longer available". The chosen pickup location can't be used for this order. |
Card-on-file orders don't use these codes:
- Storefront card-on-file orders show "The selected delivery option is no longer available."
- Admin and POS card-on-file orders show Shopify's own error. On POS this can appear only as "HTTP: 400".
The fix is the same as for checkout. Run the Quick checks for the customer's address and the products in the order.
What Shopify controls
| Behavior | Owner | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Which rates checkout offers, if any | Shopify | Set up zones, rates and locations so Shopify returns a rate. |
| A product gets a rate only from a location that stocks it and ships to the address | Shopify | Stock the product at the right location, or add the location to the profile. |
| A subscription profile with no active location makes subscription items "sold out" | Shopify | Add an active location to the profile. |
| A subscription profile zone needs a matching zone in your General profile | Shopify (not documented; tested) | Add the zone to General. |
| Zones and rates in the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile | You, in Shopify | Awtomic creates the empty profile and links plans. It never edits zones or rates. |
If you use an AI agent
These checks are for an AI agent or developer with read-only Shopify API access. Ask your agent to:
- Read the profile that applies:
deliveryProfile { profileLocationGroups { locationGroup { locations { id isActive } } locationGroupZones { zone { countries { code provinces { code } } } } } locationsWithoutRatesCount }. - Read the product's stock by location:
productVariant { inventoryItem { inventoryLevels { location { id isActive } } } }. - Compare the two, and report any state the product can't ship to from a location that stocks it.
See Debug subscription shipping with your AI agent.
