Why subscriptions use the cheapest shipping rate
Understand which shipping rate a subscription keeps after checkout, why customers often can't keep an expedited rate, and how to design rates and upgrades that work
A customer paid for 2nd Day shipping at checkout, but the renewal shipped Ground. Or subscribers ended up on a pickup-point rate meant for someone else. Or customers can't pick an expedited rate for their subscription at all. This article explains which rate a subscription keeps, what Shopify and Awtomic each control, and how to set up your rates and upgrades so subscribers get the shipping you intend.
ImportantShopify stores one rate on the subscription when it is created, and every renewal charges that stored price.
In the cases we checked on our test store, when a customer chose a more expensive rate at checkout, the subscription stored the cheapest rate for the address instead.
The customer's choice applied to the first order only.
Check the Shipping row on the subscription to see which rate was stored.
Symptoms
- "Checkout only shows the free option, not my paid upgrades."
- "Customers can't choose Ground or 2nd Day for their subscription."
- "My customer paid for expedited on the first order, but the renewal shipped Ground."
- "The $20 pickup-point rate was selected for home addresses."
- "Priority shipping disappeared from POS Card on File."
- "How do I offer expedited shipping on the first order only?"
- "After I edited the subscription, the shipping rate changed to a cheaper one."
Quick checks
- In Awtomic, open Subscriptions, then the subscription. Does the Shipping row show the rate name and price you expect? That is what the next renewal charges.
- Open the subscription's first order in Shopify admin (Orders). Compare its shipping with the subscription's Shipping row. The first order can also carry a second shipping line at $0 with the name of the rate the subscription stored.
- For the customer's address, is the rate on the subscription your cheapest rate? Include pickup-point and carrier rates, not only your flat rates.
- On the subscription page in Awtomic, does the timeline show an edit (product swap, address change or quantity change) followed by a shipping rate change?
- In Awtomic, go to Settings → Logistics and operations → Subscription shipping → Disable shipping rate updates. Is either checkbox ticked?
What Shopify does, and what Awtomic does
Shopify's behavior
Shopify's help page on subscriptions says: "After the initial delivery, recurring shipments default to the least expensive available shipping method." See Shopify's shipping rules for recurring subscription shipments.
These points also hold:
- At checkout, Shopify shows the rates your shipping profiles offer for the customer's address. The rate the customer picks applies to the first order only.
- When the subscription is created, Shopify stores a rate on it, usually the cheapest rate for that address.
- On renewals, Shopify charges the shipping price stored on the subscription. It does not look up rates again at each renewal, even if your rates change later.
- When an app asks Shopify for a subscription's rate again, Shopify returns only the cheapest shipping rate for the address, one per shipping profile. It also returns local delivery and one option per pickup location, if you offer them. More expensive rates are not offered.
Shopify staff said in October 2026 that support for several rates per delivery type is rolling out across shops. Until it reaches your store, the behavior above applies.
Awtomic's behavior
- Awtomic does not choose the checkout rate, and it has no setting that keeps or selects an expedited rate.
- When Awtomic asks Shopify for the rate again (after certain edits, an address change, a bulk refresh, or a Shopify Flow action set to Use Shopify's shipping rate), it looks for the subscription's current rate among the options Shopify returns. Awtomic matches the rate by its rate code, which identifies the rate behind the scenes.
- If the current rate is the cheapest rate, Awtomic keeps it at today's price.
- If not, Awtomic switches the subscription to the cheapest rate Shopify returned, with that rate's name and price. Because Shopify returns only the cheapest rate, a subscription on a more expensive rate always drops to the cheapest one when this happens.
The full list of actions that make Awtomic ask Shopify again is in How a subscription's shipping rate is set and when it changes.
Causes and fixes
The cheapest rate is not the one you want subscribers to get
Why it happens: When a subscription's rate is stored, and whenever Awtomic asks Shopify for it again, the cheapest rate wins. A pickup-point rate, a promotional rate or a carrier rate that is cheaper than your standard rate can end up on subscriptions for customers who never asked for it.
How to confirm: Compare the subscription's Shipping row with your rates for that address (quick check 3). If the stored rate is the cheapest one, this is the cause.
How to fix:
- Design your rates so the cheapest rate for each address is the one you want subscribers to get. See Shopify's guide to set up shipping zones and rates.
- Price pickup-point and other special rates above your standard rate, or move them to a zone or profile that subscription products do not use. Shopify's delivery methods page explains pickup points and local options.
- Keep the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile simple: one shipping rate per zone is the most predictable. See Set up subscription-specific shipping rates.
What to expect afterwards: New subscriptions get the new rate. Existing subscriptions keep their stored rate until you change them. See Bulk update shipping rates.
The rate changed after an edit
Why it happens: When a subscription is edited in the customer portal or in Awtomic, Awtomic can ask Shopify for the rate again. Shopify returns only the cheapest rate for the address and items. If the subscription was on a more expensive rate, it moves to the cheapest one.
How to confirm: Look at the subscription timeline for a shipping rate change right after an edit (quick check 4).
How to fix:
- To set the old price back for one subscriber, use Edit shipping rate on the subscription and choose Custom shipping rate. The old rate won't be in the list, because Shopify offers only the cheapest one. A custom rate is saved under the name Custom Rate. See Edit the shipping rate in a subscription.
- To stop edits from changing the rate, go to Settings → Logistics and operations → Subscription shipping → Disable shipping rate updates. Tick Do not recalculate shipping rate when the shopper updates subscription on the customer portal, Do not recalculate shipping rate when the administrator updates subscription from the Shopify app, or both.
ImportantThe customer portal checkbox does more than its name says.
It also stops Awtomic from asking Shopify for a new rate after a renewal, and it hides the rate choice in the customer portal.
See section 6 of How a subscription's shipping rate is set.
Customers want an upgrade that lasts
Shopify does not give customers a way to choose an upgrade at checkout that stays on every renewal. Choosing a more expensive rate in the customer portal later doesn't work either, because Shopify offers only the cheapest rate there. Use one of these instead:
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Add-on product | Create a product such as "Expedited shipping" and let customers add it to the subscription. You fulfill those orders faster. | A recurring upgrade the customer pays for each cycle |
| First-order-only upgrade | Offer the expedited rate at checkout and tell customers it applies to the first order only. | Faster first delivery, standard renewals |
| Custom rate on one subscription | In Awtomic, open the subscription, choose Edit shipping rate, then Custom shipping rate, and enter the upgrade price. It is saved as Custom Rate. Edits and renewals keep it. A bulk Refresh latest rate from Shopify delivery profiles replaces it with the cheapest rate. | A few subscribers who pay a different price |
A custom rate changes the name and price on the subscription. It does not pick a carrier or service for that subscriber, so you still need to ship those orders the way you promised.
Priority is missing from POS Card on File
Why it happens: POS Card on File shows only the delivery options Shopify returns for the subscription. Like every other re-check, that is the cheapest shipping rate per profile, plus local delivery and pickup if you offer them.
How to fix: Set your rates so the cheapest one is correct, or set a custom rate on the subscription after it is created.
What Shopify controls
- Which rate it stores on a new subscription. Its documented default for recurring shipments is the least expensive available shipping method (see the quote above).
- That only the cheapest shipping rate per profile is offered when an app asks for a subscription's rate again. This applies in the customer portal, in Awtomic's Edit shipping rate list, in bulk refreshes and in POS Card on File.
- That renewals charge the stored shipping price, not a fresh quote.
- That customers cannot pick an upgrade at checkout that stays on renewals.
Awtomic controls when it asks Shopify for the rate again after edits, and you can turn this off. A custom rate is the only way to keep a price that isn't the cheapest rate.
If you use an AI agent
- Ask it to read the subscription's Shipping row (rate name and price) in Awtomic and compare it with the first order's shipping lines in Shopify.
- Ask it to list your rates for the customer's address and say which is the cheapest.
- For developers: with an Awtomic API key, it can call
GET /customers/{customerId}/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}and readDeliveryMethod.shippingOptions(codeis the rate code, presentmentTitlethe rate name) andDeliveryPriceAmount. Keep it to reading. Shopify does not let other apps read Awtomic's subscriptions directly. - Full guide: Debug subscription shipping with your AI agent.
