Expired Gift Subscription Win-back Campaign
This guide walks you through setting up a win-back campaign that involves several features including Gift Subscriptions, Moments, and Campaign links.
When a gift subscription comes to an end, it can be a perfect opportunity to turn a happy gift recipient into a loyal, paying subscriber. Rather than letting that relationship end, Awtomic gives you the tools to run an automated win-back campaign that invites those customers to “keep” their subscription after the gift period expires.
This guide walks you through how to connect several Awtomic features to do exactly that.
Features You’ll Use
-
Moments – Awtomic’s retention, lifecycle, and automation tool. For this strategy, you’ll focus on the “Subscription Expired” trigger to detect when a prepaid gift subscription ends. Learn more here.
-
Campaign Links – Create unique checkout links that preselect products and subscription plans, and optionally include a discount. Learn more here.
-
Gift Subscriptions – Prepaid subscription products that include both a purchaser and recipient relationship. This guide assumes you already have gift subscriptions configured. Learn more here.
Steps to Set Up Your Win-Back Campaign
1. (Optional) Create a Discount Code
Decide whether to offer recipients an incentive to subscribe on their own. If yes, create a discount code in Shopify.
Example: Offer “15% off your first 3 months” for customers tagged as Gift Recipient
.
Tip: To make this code exclusive, first create a Shopify customer segment for users tagged
Gift Recipient
, and assign that segment to the discount code.
2. Create a Campaign Link
Set up a Campaign Link that will take customers directly to checkout with a subscription plan already selected.
You can create:
- One for a month-to-month recurring subscription.
- Others for prepaid options (e.g., 3-month, 6-month, etc.).
During setup:
- Add the discount code you created in Step 1 (if applicable).
- Verify that the correct product and selling plan are selected.
Pro tip: Use descriptive names for your campaign links (e.g., “Gift Winback – 3-Month Recur”) so they’re easy to find later.
3. Configure Your Moment
Now, use Moments to automatically trigger an email to customers whose subscriptions have expired.
Setup guide:
- Trigger:
Subscription Expired
- Segment: Customers tagged as
Gift Recipient
(This ensures only gift recipients—not standard prepaid customers—receive the email.) - Action: Send an email (either via Awtomic or Klaviyo).
Email Options:
- Awtomic Email: Quick to set up, good for simple messaging.
- Klaviyo Email (Recommended):
- Offers full design and branding flexibility.
- Lets you add logic splits (e.g., engagement-based personalization).
- To set up:
- Enable the Klaviyo integration in your Moment.
- Specify an event name (e.g.,
Gift Subscription Expired
). - Send a test event to Klaviyo to create the flow trigger.
Then, in Klaviyo, design your win-back message with your Campaign Link as the CTA:
“We hope you enjoyed your gift subscription. If you want to keep the orders coming, it is just a click away.”
Be sure your CTA uses the Campaign Link so customers go straight to checkout with their preferred subscription preselected.
Best Practices
- Timing: Send the email within 24 hours of expiration—recipients are most engaged right after their last box.
- Messaging: Reinforce the value of continuing (“Don’t miss next month’s exclusive Hero product.”)
- Testing: Try A/B testing different discount levels or message tones.
- Fallback path: If Klaviyo isn’t available, Awtomic’s native emails are a great first step.
Summary
By combining Moments, Campaign Links, and Klaviyo, you can automatically reach every expired gift recipient at exactly the right time—offering them a seamless, one-click path to keep their subscription going.
This strategy turns an expiring gift into a long-term customer relationship.
