Membership shipping discounts

A membership tier can lower what its members pay for shipping. Go beyond free shipping: take a percentage or a fixed amount off, or cap shipping at a flat rate. You can limit the benefit to subscription or one-time orders, require a minimum cart total, or apply it only to certain shipping rates. For example: "Club members pay $10 shipping on their club shipments", or "Reserve members get free shipping on orders over $150".

Members don't enter a code. The benefit applies automatically at online checkout, at POS and on their subscriptions. For how tiers work in general, see the Memberships overview.

Set up a shipping discount

1. In Awtomic, open Memberships and open the tier, or create one (see Set up a membership tier).
2. Under Benefits, turn on Shipping discounts.
3. Choose a Shipping discount type and its amount.
4. Choose which orders the discount applies to.
5. Optionally, set Minimum cart requirements and Discount limits.
6. Select Save. If the tier is already active, run Recalibrate members when the Memberships list asks you to, so existing subscriptions pick up the change.

Shipping discount type

With Specify shipping rate, as the form says, "Shipping rate will only adjust downward. If you specify a rate higher than the rate from Shopify, it will be ignored."

The discount changes each shipping option's price only. Option names, carriers and delivery times stay the same, and a shipping discount never makes an option available that your shipping settings don't offer. Each option is discounted on its own. A member's shipping price is never below $0 or above the Shopify rate.

Discount applies to

A cart with both subscription and one-time items qualifies for either option. Subscription renewals always count as recurring orders, even when they include one-time add-ons. So a One-time orders only discount never changes a renewal's shipping price.

Card-on-file orders, whether charged at POS, from the admin or on your storefront, count as one-time orders. Allocation orders count as recurring orders, so a One-time orders only discount doesn't apply to them.

Minimum cart requirements

Choose Minimum cart total to give the discount only when the order's products add up to at least that amount.

• The total uses product prices before any discounts, times their quantities. Shipping, taxes and tips don't count.
• On a subscription, every renewal is checked on its own. If a renewal drops below the minimum, for example because a one-time add-on from the last shipment isn't part of it, that renewal pays the full shipping rate. The next renewal that meets the minimum gets the discount again.

Discount limits

Choose Limit to shipping rates to discount only some of your shipping rates. Set a Limit direction and a Shipping rate limit:

• Below: only rates lower than the limit are discounted. With a $25 limit, a $15 rate is discounted, while $25 and $30 rates aren't.
• Above: only rates higher than the limit are discounted.

The limit is checked against the Shopify rate before the discount. With 50% off and Above $20, a $22 rate qualifies and members pay $11.

Where the discount applies

• Online checkout for signed-in members.
• POS for members added to the cart. POS shows the member's shipping discount amount.
• Subscriptions: Awtomic re-checks each member's shipping discount on every renewal, as well as when you, the customer or a bulk update edits the subscription. The discount is always taken off the current Shopify rate for the subscription's shipping option, never off the price stored on the subscription, so it doesn't stack up from one renewal to the next.
• Subscriptions created at checkout carry the checkout's shipping discount for the first order. From the next renewal, Awtomic applies the membership discount instead, so the member is never discounted twice.

When a customer stops qualifying for the tier, their subscriptions go back to the full shipping rate on the next renewal.

Custom shipping rates. If you set a custom shipping rate on a subscription, Awtomic keeps your rate and takes the member's discount off it. For example, a 20% discount on a $30 custom rate charges $24 on every renewal. If the member loses the benefit, the subscription goes back to $30.

One tier, one shipping discount

A customer gets the shipping discount of one tier only: the highest tier in your Memberships list that they qualify for. Shipping discounts from different tiers don't add up. Membership shipping discounts combine with your other shipping discounts, and shipping never goes below $0.

Things to know

• Currencies. Amounts you enter (Fixed discount, Specify shipping rate, Minimum cart total and Discount limits) are in your store's currency. When a member checks out in another currency, or a subscription is billed in another currency, the discount is skipped. Free shipping and Percentage without a minimum or limit work in every currency.
• All customers tiers. Shipping discounts from an All customers tier apply at checkout and at POS. They don't change shipping prices on subscription renewals.
• Disable shipping rate updates. If you turned on "Do not recalculate shipping rate when the shopper updates subscription on the customer portal" in your Awtomic shipping settings, Awtomic doesn't change your subscriptions' shipping prices on renewals or when you recalibrate members. Membership shipping discounts at checkout and POS still apply.
• Tiers set up with Free shipping on all orders. Tiers you created with the earlier Free shipping on all orders switch keep working exactly as before. When you open one, it shows Free shipping, Recurring and one-time orders, No minimum requirements and No discount limits.
