Renewal failed: INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND
Find out why a renewal was held with "No inventory location found or enabled", fix the location, inventory or shipping setting behind it, and bill the subscription again
A renewal didn't bill, and the subscription moved to Needs Review with the billing error INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND. In plain words: Shopify couldn't find a place to send the order from. It needs one location (a warehouse, winery, store or pickup spot) that has stock of every item and offers the subscription's delivery method to its address.
This is a store settings problem, not a payment problem. A new card from the customer won't fix it.
ImportantAwtomic does not retry billing automatically for this error.
After you fix the cause, click Order now on the subscription to bill it.
Mark as reviewed only clears the flag. It does not bill the subscription.
Symptoms
- A banner on the subscription: "Subscription flagged as Needs Review" with "The subscription order was held due to a billing error: INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND - No inventory location found or enabled".
- A timeline entry: "Subscription order held due to billing issue: INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND".
- The subscription appears under the Needs Review tab in your subscriptions list.
- The error code
INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUNDin a billing export or the Awtomic API.
What merchants often say:
- "Marking it as reviewed doesn't help."
- "The items are in stock."
- "We have Continue selling when out of stock turned on."
- "It started after we removed a location."
- "It started after we turned off local delivery."
Quick checks
- What is the subscription's delivery method: shipping, local delivery or pickup? Open the subscription in Awtomic and look at the title of its address section (Shipping address, Local delivery address or Pickup address).
- Is every item on the subscription stocked, with a quantity above zero, at a location that can fulfill it? In Shopify admin, check Products → [product] → Inventory. A negative quantity counts as no stock, even with Continue selling when out of stock. If no, go to No stock at the location that serves the address.
- Is it a Shuffle, Build-a-Box or other bundle? Are both the parent product and every item in it stocked? If no, go to A bundle's parent or child item is out of stock.
- Pickup: Is every item stocked at the subscription's pickup location, and does that location still offer pickup? If no, go to The pickup location has no stock or no longer offers pickup.
- Local delivery: Is local delivery still turned on at a location that has stock and delivers to this address? Does the order meet any minimum order amount you set for local delivery? If no, go to Local delivery was turned off or no longer covers the address.
- Shipping: Does a shipping profile that applies to these products have a zone with a rate for this address? Check military (APO/FPO), Alaska, Hawaii and international addresses. If no, go to No shipping zone covers the address.
- Did you recently remove, deactivate or merge a location? If yes, go to A location was removed or consolidated.
- Did many subscriptions fail at the same time, across products and addresses? If yes, go to Shopify had an incident.
After you fix the cause, go to Bill the subscription again.
Causes and fixes
No stock at the location that serves the address
This is the most common cause.
Why it happens: At billing, Shopify must set aside stock at a location that ships to the subscription's address. If that location has zero or negative stock, Shopify can't set it aside. Continue selling when out of stock does not help, because the quantity can't go below zero at billing. If you have more than one shipping profile, it must be the profile and location that cover this customer's address.
How to confirm:
- Note the subscription's address.
- Find the profile that applies to the subscription's products. If Enable subscription shipping is on for the plan, that is the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile. Open it from Awtomic: go to Settings → Logistics and operations and click Manage rates. It is not listed on Shopify's Settings → Shipping and delivery page. Otherwise it is usually the General profile, under Settings → Shipping and delivery in Shopify admin.
- Find which location in that profile ships to the address.
- Open each product and check its stock at that location.
How to fix: Do one of these:
- Add stock at that location, or correct a negative count. Shopify explains how to assign inventory to locations.
- Stock the product at a location that does ship to the address.
- Add the location that has stock to the profile, with a zone and rate for the address. See manage fulfillment locations in shipping profiles.
Changing Awtomic's inventory settings does not fix this error. Those settings control what happens to out-of-stock items at renewal. They don't change which location Shopify can take stock from. See Inventory settings.
A bundle's parent or child item is out of stock
Why it happens: For Shuffles and bundles, both the parent product (the box itself) and the child products (the items inside it) need stock above zero at the location.
How to confirm: Check stock at the location for the parent product and for every item in the box.
How to fix: Restock the out-of-stock items, or replace them on the subscription.
The pickup location has no stock or no longer offers pickup
Why it happens: A pickup order can only take stock from its pickup location. Your items may be in stock at your warehouse but not at the pickup location. The location may also have stopped offering pickup.
How to confirm: Open the subscription and note its pickup location. In Shopify, check that every item is stocked at that location. Then check that pickup is still turned on for it, under Settings → Shipping and delivery → Additional delivery methods → Pickup in store. Shopify explains the settings under set up pickup in store.
How to fix: Add stock at the pickup location, turn pickup back on, or move the subscription to a different pickup location. Tell the customer if their pickup location changes. For how pickup works with subscriptions and how to change a subscriber's pickup location, see Local pickup and local delivery for subscriptions.
Local delivery was turned off or no longer covers the address
Why it happens: The subscription still uses local delivery, and you turned local delivery off, moved it to another app, or changed its delivery area. Shopify can't place the order with a delivery method that no longer exists. A minimum order amount on local delivery can also block a renewal below that amount, for example a $0 order.
How to confirm: In Shopify, check the local delivery settings of each location with stock. Is local delivery on? Does the delivery area include the address? Does the order meet the minimum? Shopify's page on how to set up local delivery shows where these settings are.
How to fix: Turn local delivery back on, or change each affected subscription to shipping.
The steps to change a subscription's delivery method are in Move one subscriber to a different delivery method. The shipping rate is usually different from your local delivery fee, so tell your customers before you change them. There is no bulk tool to change the delivery method. If many subscriptions are affected, contact support.
No shipping zone covers the address
Why it happens: None of the shipping profiles that apply to these products has a zone and rate for the address. A zone is a group of countries or states that share rates. This often happens with military (APO/FPO), Alaska, Hawaii or international addresses.
Even if your Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile covers the address, Shopify also needs the address in a zone of your General profile (Shopify's default profile). Every zone in the subscription profile must also exist in General. We tested this: a zone added only to the subscription profile returned no rate, and the rate appeared once the same country was added to General. In one common case, the subscription profile included Alaska and General did not, and renewals to Alaska failed.
If you offer local pickup, Shopify needs a shipping zone for the pickup location in your shipping settings. The zone doesn't need any rates. Shopify doesn't document a zone requirement for local delivery.
How to confirm: Check the zones of the Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile (open it from Manage rates in Awtomic's Settings → Logistics and operations) and of General (in Shopify's Settings → Shipping and delivery) for the address's country and state.
How to fix: Add the country or state to a zone with at least one rate in each profile that applies, and to General. Shopify explains how to set up shipping zones and rates. For more zone checks, see No shipping rates for subscription products.
A location was removed or consolidated
Why it happens: Subscriptions do not stay tied to a specific shipping location. At each renewal, Shopify looks for a location that can fulfill the order. After you remove, deactivate or merge a location, the remaining locations must have stock and be in the right profiles. A common cause is negative stock at the locations that remain.
How to confirm: Check stock for the subscription's items at the remaining locations. Check that those locations are in the profile with zones for the address. Shopify's page on how to add a location also covers deactivating one and the "Inventory at this location is available to fulfill online orders" setting.
How to fix: Correct the stock and profile settings at the remaining locations. You don't need to change the subscription itself, unless it is a pickup subscription whose pickup location was removed.
Shopify had an incident
Why it happens: A Shopify incident has deselected zones and states in shops' profiles before. Renewals then failed with this error across many subscriptions at once, even for products that don't track inventory.
How to confirm: Check shopifystatus.com. Check that your zones still list their countries and states.
How to fix: Re-select your zones if needed. After Shopify recovers, bill each affected subscription again. If many subscriptions are affected, contact support.
Bill the subscription again
Awtomic does not retry this error. A failed card is retried on your dunning (payment retry) schedule. This error is caused by store settings, so a retry without a fix would fail again.
After you fix the cause:
- Open the subscription in Awtomic.
- Click Order now, then Complete order in the Confirm order now window.
- Check that you see "Subscription order created" and that a new order appears.
If you see "Subscription order failed. Please wait a minute and try again. If this continues please contact" support, or the subscription is held again with the same error, the cause is not fixed yet. Run the Quick checks again.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Order now | Tries to bill the subscription again right away. |
| Mark as reviewed | Clears the Needs Review flag. It does not bill the subscription or retry the order. |
| Customer updates their card | Does not fix this error. |

If you use an AI agent
These checks are for an AI agent or developer with API access. Ask your agent to:
- Read the subscription's billing attempts through the Awtomic API (
GET /customers/{customerId}/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}/billing-attempts) and confirm the error code and message. - Read the subscription's delivery method and address (
GET /customers/{customerId}/subscriptions/{subscriptionId}). - Run read-only Shopify queries for each item's
inventoryLevelsper location, and for the zones and locations of the profiles that apply. - Report which location should fulfill the order and what is missing there.
See Debug subscription shipping with your AI agent.
