Local pickup and local delivery for subscriptions

Offer local pickup and local delivery on subscriptions, fix pickup that does not show at checkout, and move a subscriber between pickup and shipping

Subscribers can pick up their orders or get them by local delivery, not only by shipping. This article is for you if pickup or local delivery doesn't show at checkout for subscription products, if you need to move a subscriber from one delivery method to another, or if Convert to shipping on a pickup order shows an error.

Shopify decides which delivery methods a customer sees at checkout, based on your locations, inventory and delivery settings. Shopify's page on Shopify's shipping rules for recurring subscription shipments lists local delivery and pickup in store as supported for subscriptions.

Note

Older Awtomic articles said subscriptions can only use shipping.
That is no longer true.
Pickup and local delivery work with Awtomic subscriptions when Shopify offers them at checkout.

Symptoms

  • "Local delivery or pickup is not offered for subscriptions."
  • "My customer can't pick up their club order, only ship it."
  • In the customer portal: "No pick up locations available" or "No local delivery locations available".
  • In the customer portal, when changing to local delivery: "Enter a phone number for this local delivery."
  • On a pickup order, Convert to shipping shows "No shipping addresses available for this customer" with "Navigate to the customer within Shopify and add the address prior to initiating this process again to continue."
  • On a pickup order, Convert to shipping shows "No shipping rates available for this address".
  • On a pickup order, Convert to shipping shows "This order is already a shipping order".
  • "Bundle items on a pickup order were set to ship."
  • "I turned off local delivery and now renewals need review."

Quick checks

  1. Does a one-time purchase of the same product offer pickup at checkout? Test it from your storefront with the same address. If no, the cause is your Shopify location or inventory setup, not the subscription.
  2. In Shopify admin, go to Products, open the product, and check Inventory. Is the variant stocked at the pickup location?
  3. In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery → Additional delivery methods → Pickup in store. Is pickup turned on for that location? A pickup location also needs a shipping zone in your shipping settings, but the zone doesn't need any rates.
  4. Is the product in a shipping profile that also has shipping rates for the customer's address? If yes, customers can choose shipping instead of pickup. (A shipping profile is Shopify's set of shipping rules for a group of products.)
  5. On the subscription in Awtomic, which delivery method is saved: shipping, local delivery or pickup? The address section on the subscription page is titled Shipping address, Pickup address or Local delivery address.
  6. Is that delivery method still turned on at a location that stocks every item? If no, see You turned off local delivery or pickup, and renewals now need review.

Local delivery is set up under Settings → Shipping and delivery → Additional delivery methods → Local delivery.

Causes and fixes

Pickup is not offered at checkout

Why it happens: Shopify only offers pickup when the item has stock at the pickup location and pickup is turned on for that location. By default, Shopify's set up pickup in store page says the entire order must be in stock at the pickup location. Shopify also sends each item to the location that holds its stock. If one item in a bundle is stocked only at a warehouse that doesn't offer pickup, that item can be set to ship.

How to confirm: Check the variant's stock at the pickup location, and check that pickup is on for that location (Quick checks 2 and 3).

How to fix:

  1. Stock every variant the subscriber receives at the pickup location. For bundles and Build-a-Box, check each item, not only the parent product.
  2. Turn on pickup for the location in Settings → Shipping and delivery → Additional delivery methods → Pickup in store. If Shopify says the location isn't available for pickup, add a shipping zone for it. The zone doesn't need any rates.
  3. If a product should be pickup-only, keep it out of shipping profiles that have shipping rates for your customers' addresses.

What to expect afterwards: New checkouts show pickup. Existing subscriptions keep the delivery method they already have. To change one, see Move one subscriber to a different delivery method.

Shopify applies one delivery method to the whole order

Why it happens: Shopify applies the chosen delivery method to the entire checkout. A customer can't pick up the subscription and ship a one-time item in the same order. Shopify is adding ship and pickup in one order for some Plus stores (see the next generation of Shopify fulfillment), but its subscription developer docs still say mixed delivery methods aren't supported for subscription checkouts.

How to fix: Nothing to fix. If customers need different methods, they place separate orders. For other mixed-cart behavior, see Mixed carts.

Shopify also notes that pickup and local delivery might not be supported on subscriptions for some Shopify Plus merchants with custom checkouts.

Local delivery costs the same for subscriptions and one-time orders

Why it happens: Shopify doesn't let you set a different local delivery price for subscription items and one-time items. You set local delivery prices per delivery zone when you set up local delivery. The Awtomic Subscription Shipping profile changes shipping rates, not local delivery prices.

How to fix: If you need a different price for subscribers, use a discount on the subscription. See Free shipping for subscriptions.

Pickup and local delivery prices do not change when a subscription is edited

Why it happens: When a subscription is edited, Awtomic can ask Shopify for the shipping rate again. Renewals never do this: they bill the saved price.

  • Pickup: Awtomic never asks Shopify for a new pickup price on edits. The saved price stays the same.
  • Local delivery: product edits in the Awtomic admin and the customer portal skip the rate check. Awtomic can still ask Shopify for the local delivery price again right after the subscription is created, after some add-on changes, and in a bulk shipping rate refresh.

On pickup and local delivery subscriptions, Edit shipping rate on the subscription page is greyed out. You can't change the rate there.

🚧

Important

Bulk shipping rate updates set pickup subscriptions to $0, in both modes.
This happens even though the form's note says pickup gets the latest rate from Shopify.
Leave pickup subscriptions out of the bulk update if they pay a pickup fee.
See Bulk update shipping rates.

What to expect: A pickup subscription keeps its price until you change its delivery method or include it in a bulk shipping rate update. A local delivery subscription keeps its price through most edits.

Move one subscriber to a different delivery method

There is no bulk tool to change the delivery method for many subscriptions. Change them one at a time, or contact Awtomic support for a large batch.

From the Awtomic admin:

  1. Open the subscription in Awtomic.
  2. On the Shipping address card (it reads Pickup address for pickup subscribers), select Edit.
  3. In Choose delivery method, choose Ship or Pick up, then select Continue.
  4. For Ship, pick an address in Select delivery address, select Continue, then check the rate Shopify calculated in Confirm shipping rate. For Pick up, choose a location in Select pickup location.
  5. Select Confirm.

This flow offers no local delivery choice and no custom rate field. To set your own price after a move to shipping, use Edit shipping rate on the subscription. See Edit the shipping rate in a subscription.

On a local delivery subscription, the card is titled Local delivery address. If you can't move it to shipping from there, contact support.

From the customer portal: customers can change the address and delivery method themselves, including their pickup location. Local delivery requires a phone number. Without one, the portal shows "Enter a phone number for this local delivery."

What to expect afterwards: The next renewal uses the new method and price. The shipping rate is usually different from your local delivery fee, so tell your customers before you change them. For more on custom rates, see Edit the shipping rate in a subscription.

You turned off local delivery or pickup, and renewals now need review

Why it happens: Existing subscriptions keep the delivery method they were created with. When you turn local delivery or pickup off at the location, Shopify can't place the renewal, and it fails with the billing error INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND (Shopify couldn't find a location that can fulfill the order).

How to fix:

  1. Turn the method back on until every subscriber is moved, or move each affected subscriber to shipping (see the section above).
  2. Bill the failed renewals with Order now. These failures don't retry on their own.

For the full checklist, including stock at the location and minimum order amounts, see Renewal failed: INVENTORY_ALLOCATIONS_NOT_FOUND.

"Convert to shipping" errors on a pickup order

Convert to shipping is an Awtomic action on a Shopify order's page. It cancels the pickup order and creates a new shipping order in its place. It may charge shipping. Inventory goes back to the original location and is taken from the new one.

It only works when all of these are true:

RequirementWhat you see if it is not met
The order is a local pickup order with no shipping address"This order is already a shipping order"
The order is not fulfilled"Cannot convert orders that have already been marked as fulfilled"
The order is not cancelled"This order is already cancelled"
The customer has a saved address in the same state or province as the pickup location"No shipping addresses available for this customer"
Shopify returns at least one shipping rate for the address and every item"No shipping rates available for this address"
The customer has a payment method on file"No payment methods available for this customer"

Do not add a shipping address to the Shopify order first. That makes the order look like a shipping order, and the action stops with "This order is already a shipping order". Add the address to the customer in Shopify instead.

Same-state only: Awtomic only converts to an address in the pickup location's state, to reduce compliance risk. For a different state, cancel and refund the pickup order, change the subscription to shipping, then use Order now.

"No shipping rates available for this address": at least one item has no shipping rate for that address. To find it, create a test draft order in Shopify with the same items and address, then remove items one at a time until a rate appears. Fix the profile, location or inventory for that item, then try again. See No shipping rates for subscription products. When Shopify does return rates, you can also choose Custom and enter a shipping price.

If you use an AI agent

These checks start in Shopify admin. The last one is for an agent or developer with API access.

  • Ask it to check, in Shopify admin, the variant's stock at the pickup location and whether pickup is on for that location.
  • Ask it to read the subscription's saved delivery method and address from the Awtomic admin.
  • For developers: it can read Shopify locations { localPickupSettingsV2 }. The Awtomic POST .../shipping-options call creates a subscription draft (a pending edit), so treat it as a write and confirm before it runs.
  • Full guide: Debug subscription shipping with your AI agent.
